Governments have countless ways to influence trade beyond just tariffs, often with unintended consequences that ripple across industries. From sweet treats to rugged SUVs, well-intentioned policies designed to protect one group can end up burdening another, distorting markets and raising costs for everyone.
U.S. sugar policy artificially inflates prices through minimum price guarantees, forcing candy makers like Spangler to move production abroad despite patriotic branding. These protections, rooted in historical farm subsidies and lobbying power, persist even though they harm manufacturers and consumers. Similarly, auto safety regulations—while well-meaning—act as invisible trade barriers. Differences between U.S. and European standards for things like turn signals and crash tests require costly redesigns, limiting efficiency in a globalized industry. The Jeep Wrangler, built to conquer rough terrain, must also navigate bureaucratic obstacles that keep identical vehicles from crossing borders. Over time, these regulatory divides have become increasingly irrational as global supply chains evolve. Yet reform remains difficult due to entrenched interests and political inertia. Ultimately, both sugar and car regulations reveal how protectionism often protects the few at the expense of the many, making products more expensive and production less efficient—all while claiming to defend American jobs.
