In this episode, Kathleen Brooks shares her harrowing journey from being drawn into Chi Alpha, a campus ministry, to becoming a leader within it, and eventually uncovering the deep manipulation and abuse that defined her two decades there. Her story reveals how a search for belonging can be exploited by charismatic authority, leading to control over every aspect of life, and the painful path to recognizing and escaping a toxic system.
Kathleen Brooks recounts how Chi Alpha, affiliated with the Assemblies of God, used love-bombing and spiritual authority to control students, preying on her need for belonging and a father figure. Under leader Mark, she experienced isolation, control over her relationships, and delayed marriage and family plans, all framed as obedience to God. The toll led to a psychotic break, yet leaving was unthinkable due to spiritual and social pressure. After Mark's death, hidden sexual abuse and financial irregularities surfaced, prompting Kathleen to take responsibility for her role in perpetuating harm. She and her husband Ryan eventually left, losing friends and funding, but found a community of former members with similar experiences. Reflecting on 20 years lost, Kathleen expresses regret but also hope and healing, noting her marriage remains strong despite different deconstruction paths.
