In this episode, Andy Mant of BLUblox returns to discuss the pervasive impact of artificial light on our health, from hormone disruption and accelerated aging to fertility issues. The conversation goes beyond blue light glasses to explore how modern lighting affects our skin, sleep, and overall well-being, offering practical solutions for creating a healthier light environment.
Andy Mant explains that artificial blue light from screens and LEDs lacks the balancing red and infrared light found in sunlight, causing eye strain, hormone dysregulation, and skin aging by disrupting the skin's circadian clock. He emphasizes that technology hacks like blue-blocking glasses are only part of a broader strategy; getting natural sunlight at key times is crucial to entrain the circadian rhythm. Hidden blue light sources in homes, such as fridge LEDs and routers, can disrupt sleep, so covering them and using red light sources like beeswax candles after sunset is recommended. Andy links disrupted circadian rhythms to infertility in both men and women, noting that low melatonin is associated with PCOS, reduced testosterone, and lower conception rates. He also explains that skin has its own circadian rhythm and can detect blue light, recommending covering skin at night and using red light for morning routines. A daily light routine involves using blue-blocking glasses after sunset, winding down with candles, and getting morning sunlight to set the circadian rhythm.
